Bluffton's Gullah Culture Must Be Preserved, Told, and Honored.

The aroma of stewed vegetables permeating the summer air, with blue crab steaming in a cauldron and anxious eyes and eager taste buds waiting to taste the sweetness of the May River. Oysters dredged from the pluff mudd brimming over bateau boats as whiting fish jump out of buckets. Bluffton Gullah has impacted the area of Bluffton and the Lowcountry significantly. From Gullah Co-op oyster factories, praise houses, graded schools, juke joints, fueling stations, restaurants, midwives, craftsman, artists, historic churches, businesses, architectural ingenuity, freedmen and so much more. The Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center will be the newest addition along the nationally recognized Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. The Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit cultural and educational organization, founded in 2021, with tax identification number 87-3243654. Help us tell the stories of the rich, vibrant culture of Bluffton's Gullah natives, as they too have a story to tell. Telling these stories will allow the world to connect with our beloved Gullah-Geechee Culture, pass on important lessons from previous generations, and provide a sense of continuity in Bluffton's history.

Our capital campaign goal will fund all operational expenses for the heritage center, our executive director, program director and additional staff positions, the acquisition of the property and building that houses the center, programming and exhibit features, historical research to catalog forgotten stories and archival photos and other budgeted project expenses; all of which will be made accessible for the public. We are excited to welcome all to join us and track our funding journey as we work towards our capital goal.
